Health and Beauty

Why is oiliness caused?

The skin all over the body produces oil from glands called as sebaceous glands. These glands secrete sebum, which is an oily substance and the cause for oiliness in the body. These glands are overactive in some parts of the body such as the face and scalp for some people. On the scalp, excessive oiliness is caused when these glands that are attached to the hair follicle release excess sebum.

The release of excessive sebum can be caused due to a number of factors such as hormonal changes, taking medical treatments and use of medicines. Fungal diseases of the sebaceous glands can also be a cause for excessive oiliness. In teenagers, hormonal changes that happen during their transition from childhood can cause an increase in the activity of the sebaceous glands. An outbreak of acne is a result of this hyperactivity. Oily hair and skin can also be caused due to hereditary factors.

Problems of oily hair

The most common problems of oily hair is lifelessness. Hair sticks to the scalp and cannot be styled. It lies limp, lacks volume and looks very dull. When the hair is oily, there is higher accumulation of dirt and grime in the pores and scalp, which causes infections if not taken care of. Dandruff is a common repercussion of oily hair as acne is for the skin. Oily hair is also better than excessively dry hair because dry hair tends to break and split. Hair loss is also higher for people with dry hair.

On the skin, excessive oiliness can cause an outbreak of acne, blackheads, open pores and dullness. In general, hyperactivity of the sebaceous gland causes dullness and the hair and skin appear greasy. There is always an unhealthy luster on the skin. However, oiliness has advantages as well. Oily skin ages more slowly than dry skin since elasticity is retained for longer time. Oil keeps the hair and skin moisturized. Excessive secretion is undesirable.

Care for oily skin and hair

The best way to take care of oily hair and skin is to clean them regularly with medicated shampoo and face washes since chances of infection is higher in oily hair and skin. You can also use shampoos and soaps that rebalance the pH level of the skin. Skin is supposed to be slightly acidic in nature. Oiliness destroys this acidity. Products containing zinc, vitamin and carotene can be used. Diet should be devoid of oily foods and inclusive of nutrients. Drinking lots of water is of prime importance.
