A new study has revealed that Sinus infection may be a major cause or a primary factor in about 20% of the toxic shock syndrome cases that are reported in children. Some of the symptoms associated with toxic shock syndrome include fever, rash and low blood pressure and these were mainly thought as disease associated with menstruation and tampon use. There are also other risk factors found with the toxic shock syndrome like focal infection and surgical wound infection.

The researchers have conducted a study on 76 children aged 10 and have found to have toxic shock syndrome. Of these 76, 23 of them are reported to be diagnosed with either acute or chronic rhinosinusitis- infections in the sinus passage around the nose.

These ten were admitted for further study and it was found that 4 required medication to increase blood pressure while the remaining required surgery. This study reveals some important points about the toxic shock syndrome and rhinosinusitis.  The study also confirms that sinus infections are the primary cause to this shock syndrome.
